I love this, Alexandra! It's such a treat to wade into a new genre and explore and suss out your taste. I'm looking forward to seeing where your exploration takes you!
Love these reflections! The romance genre is so expansive, filled with unlimited subgenres and moods. I'm glad you're finding what works for you! I second the Abby Jimenez rec, and I think Hannah Bonam-Young's books might fit in well here, too.
I've been working to grow my romance reading muscles, and I'm officially a big fan! I loved Happy Place and Emily Henry's latest release Funny Story is even better! I haven't tried any Abby Jimenez yet so that's my next adventure. Ooooo Expiration Dates was so so so good!! My three recommendations for ya would be Lease on Love by Fallon Ballard, A Love Song For Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams and Lizzie Blakes Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings.
Ohhh I love this journey for us š„° I just bought Funny Story so I can be part of the excitement in real time for this one! And thanks for the recsāall added to my list! Abby Jimenez is up there too!
Abby Jimenez is probably my favorite romance author as of the last few years. I love magical realism in my romance so I recommend Ashley Postonās books and The Unmaking of June Farrow (more of a genre mashup).
Itās amazing what happens when we open our minds. The world becomes full of possibilities that were once unimaginable. Iām so happy that you have become aware of this on your reading journey. Iām also going to read both Happy Place and Funny Story and I canāt wait to talk with you about them. So glad I found your Substack!

Thanks so much Michelle! I feel like (as usual š) our tastes really align here so Iām excited to be on the journey together!
I don't usually read romance but lately I've been feeling like I want to give it a go, especially Emily Henry... everyone seems to love her!
Yes! Iād love for you to join me on this journeyā¦I just started Funny Story! Are there any romances youāve read that you really enjoyed?
Years ago I loved When rainbows end and One day āŗļø
I think youād love to try Out of Love by Hazel Hayes too! Iāve seen it described a little bit like One Day.

Might I suggest you start with Book Lovers by Emily Henry? Itās top tier. All of hers are fantastic, but that one is elite!
